Following the recent retirement announcements of Ashley Community Schools Superintendent/High School Principal Traci Gavenda and Fulton Schools Superintendent Thomas Torok, the Boards of Education for Ashley Community Schools and Fulton Schools have come together to take an exciting next step for our districts.
Both boards have agreed to work collaboratively to hire one superintendent who will serve both school districts, strengthening partnerships and ensuring continued leadership and support for students, staff, and families in our communities.

Katerin earned 1st place at the Michigan ProStart Competition, showcasing incredible precision and talent on a statewide stage. From flawless fine julienne to beautifully executed chiffonade cuts, she demonstrated outstanding skill, technique, and confidence throughout the competition.

On Tuesday, April 7, 2026, beginning at 6 pm, the candidates are scheduled for interviews
are Randy Cusack, Brent Cole, and Alexis Shaver.
-Rand Cusack, current Director of Special Education at Eaton County RESA.
-Brent Cole, current 6-12 Principal at Climax-Scotts Community Schools.
-Alexis Shaver, current PK-12 and Alternative Education Principal at Carson City-Crystal
Area Schools.
On Thursday, April 9, 2026, beginning at 6 p.m., the candidates scheduled for interviews are David Farley and Ryan Portenga.
-David Farley, current Middle School Principal at Shepherd Public Schools.
-Ryan Portenga, current Middle School/High School Principal at Pewamo-Westphalia Community Schools.
The Board of Education invites parents, family members, community members, and district staff to attend the interviews. All interviews will be held in the library at Fulton Schools Middle School, located at 8060 Ely Highway, Middleton, MI 48856. Interviews will begin promptly at 6 p.m. Each interview will last approximately 45 minutes.
